Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Our treatment of orthopedic injuries begins with an evaluation to determine the root cause of the injury and education on how to avoid further irritating it. We then focus on decreasing pain and improving mobility and strength. Finally, we educate our patients in a home exercise program to prevent further injury.

Common orthopedic problems treated include:

  • Sprains / Strains
  • Joint Replacements
  • Shoulder Impingement
  • Plantar Fasciitis & other foot related disorders
  • Tendonitis / Bursitis
  • Meniscus Tears
  • Dislocation / Instability
  • Adhesive Capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
  • Arthritis
  • Fracture
  • Post-Surgical Reconstruction

Athletic Rehabilitation

Athletic injuries are orthopedic injuries with a sport specific element and are usually due to a traumatic event.

Our treatment of athletic injuries begins by reducing the inflammation and swelling. Our focus next is to regain full flexibility and strength. Finally, we focus on endurance and tolerance for dynamic movement. Again, as in orthopedic rehabilitation, injury prevention through patient education is critical.

Our goal is for the athlete to return to their sport as quickly as possible while preventing a re-injury.

Common athletic injuries treated include:

  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Epicondylitis
  • Ankle sprain
  • Patella-Femoral syndrome
  • Illiotibial band (ITB) syndrome
  • ACL tears

Spinal Rehabilitation:

Spinal rehabilitation is an area of expertise in physical therapy which should only be performed by a qualified therapist with extensive education and experience specific to the spine. Spinal rehabilitation refers to problems with your neck or back.
Gemini Physical Therapy Spine & Sports Rehabilitation Center’s staff are experts in spinal rehabilitation with post-graduate training in the McKenzie and Duffy-Rath approach to mechanical diagnosis and treatment.

In spinal rehabilitation, we focus on educating our patients on the root cause of their injury. We instruct our patients in stretches and activities they can do at home to relieve their pain and improve mobility. We then focus on improving their mobility and strength while finally creating an exercise program they can do at home.

Common spinal disorders treated include:

  • Herniated and bulging discs
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Scoliosis
  • Degenerative discs
  • Sacroiliac dysfunction
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Facet problems
  • Spondylosis

Terminology:

Exercise: Refers to a different types of stretching and strengthening activities which are performed by the therapist (with the therapist’sassistance/supervision, or independently). All exercises are designed specifically for the injury being treated for maximal benefit. Exercises will progress as a patient’s condition progresses and will be modified for continuation at home or at a gym.

Modalities: Refers to external devices to reduce pain, improve healing, decrease inflammation, and increase blood flow. These modalities include electrical stimulation, ultrasound, heat, ice, laser (class IV medical), phonophoresis and iontophoresis.

Assessment: Refers to the identification of the origin of injury and the means of resolving it. It is determined at the time of the initial evaluation and as healing occurs throughout, during each subsequent visit. An assessment incorporates patient symptom behavior, complaints, and physical findings (strength, flexibility, etc…) and is optimally obtained through combined input from the patient and technical skills of the Physical Therapist.
